My 1990 Evinrude 3hp died out while running wide open and will not stay running now. It will start up and run a few minutes but stalls out. I can pull the choke to keep it going a little but it will stall out in a few minutes. This happened last year and I just put up in the garage to look at it later. Well now is later.
Just a little background that might help. It sat for several years prior to me starting to use it again in fresh water last year. Prior to this we purchased it new in 1990 and it was used exclusively in salt water. Last year before I did anything I changed the impeller, plugs, and did some carb work. The carb work included a carb kit to replace a bad float and stuck needle and blew out the carb with my air compressor.
This year I replaced the plugs again, put fresh gas in but it won’t stay running. It is spitting water out of the vent holes as it normally does so it appears the impeller is working fine.
Suggestions with where to start?
