1990 25hp Evinrude

Hello, I have a 1990 25hp outboard that starts ok but coughs and back fires some at low idle and then will just quite like it ran out of gas. I bought the outboard used about 10 ears ago. It has always back fired wen at an idle. The quitting part was new towards the end of last season.I have a 14 boat with the gas tank mounted in the front. I thought maybe the tank was to far away so I move it to the back and hooked up a shorter hose. Nothing changed. Any thoughts? Thank You!

Start from the beginning it should never backfire or cough period. Do a compression test and get back with the numbers. Whats the model number?

Hello, Thank you for responding. I will try and get a tester tomorrow and get the readings. It is a model # E25RESB

sounds like the throttle plate is opening too early.
