1990 2.3 l omc cobra

New member
New to the board here and looking for help. 1990 2.3 omc cobra runs and idles fine with muffs on. Get it in the water and runs fine until the engine warms up. Once warm it will start but not idle. I have to keep the rpms up to keep it running. It then is very difficult to get into gear and go because when you idle down to shift it will stall out.

Any suggestions?

possibly a choke stuck partially closed. seems like it is running a bit rich. do you smell any unburned gas by chance off the stern of the boat once warm? if the choke sticks closed it will run rich and it is esintially flooding the engine with gas. this will make it stall and not idle, its not til you get some air flowing in that it runs right

It could also be a low float level. When it's cold, the choke provides enough pressure delta (lower pressure in the venturi) to "pull" the fuel out of the float bowl, via the idle circuit.

After the engine warms up, the choke butterfly valve opens up all the way, decreasing the pressure delta and no longer "pulls" the fuel thru the idle circuit.
With an improper amount of fuel flowing thru the idle circuit, it will stall.

Try manually actuating the choke a bit to see if it keeps running after it warms up.

There could also be a problem with trash or dirt in the float bowl/idle circiut.
