1990 150 Mercury xr4 drive problem

My 150 xr4 Merc went down yesterday, the top end of the gear deive shaft is worn and seems the gear that it fits into must be stripped.
How difficult is it to remove the power head to get to this part and change it out.

When I removed the lower unit i can rotate the shaft by hand, oil in leg is black. Hopefully no damage in gear unit.

Any suggestions.

If you are talking spline at the end of the driveshaft and the spline in the crankshaft , then this is going to be an expensive project !--------------It just might be better to find a used powerhead or other motor.
