hi all i am new to this forum and also to repair of outboards. i have a mariner 40 which has stopped pumping water from the little i have found out i belive it could be the impeller. first off am i thinking along the right path and second is there anyway to test this. i have tryed today to remove the lower unit so i could get access to the pump and impeller but have not been able to separate it fully i can only get it about 1/4 to 1/2 inch away so i guess i have missed doing something so any help will be gratefully received
thanks dave

Hi Dave,
Did you get the bolt under the trim tab? Is this a Yamaha Mariner or a Merc. Mariner? You are on the right track with the impeller,it should to be replaced at least every two years. Could be dirt,or some other rubbish in the water intake,so poke the tell tale with a fine bit of strimmer line or blow air down.

thanks for the reply sorry i dont know which make it is the serial number is 6E9S005394 i only know its a 1989 as i had to find this out for the insurance. also sorry if stupid but what bolt under the trim tab the only bolts i have removed are the 6 on the lower unit.

Did you pull the trim tab and have a look in there? By that number you have a Yamaha built mariner which is an exact copy of Yamaha's older 40FE '81-'83

Just a suggestion, but if the impeller hasn't been changed in the last two years,it might be a good idea to change it.If the motor is new to you I would change it anyway even if the seller told me he changed it yesterday.
