last summer i picked up a cheap smokercraft with an older mariner 40 ELO outboard on it as a project boat. throughout the last couple months ive had some odd issues with it. it start and idles fine on muffs in the yard but when i put it into the water it will only idle when the fast idle lever is up and whenever i try to shift into gear it cuts out. i tried to increase the idle speed thinking it may be to low but no mater how much i adjust the screw or ever move the idle arm it doesn't seem to make any difference when it comes to idle speed. i took apart the carbs thinking the jets might be clogged and while stuff was dirty it didn't seem to help. the odd thing is that on one of my trial trips i found that there is a tiny area in the gear box that allows me to start the engine in forward drive without effecting the neutral safety switch. if i do that that it ran great at medium and high rpm and even idles fine after a little warm up. at the end of a 3 day trip it started acting up, was extremely hard to start and would only idle. any throttle and the engine would cut out. one friend says that he thinks i need to rebuild the carbs but i wanted a second opinion before i buy a kit.
