I am new to this site..and also not really familar with the Johnson 225 motor on a boat I recently purchase. The Boat...A Chris Craft, the motor and trailor were all purchased new as a single unit by the previous owner in 1989..So I am the second owner. The motor was professionally rebuilt 3 years ago and has low hours since then. I runs like a champ...but it sucks gas like crazy. The owner maintained the boat, motor and trailor very well and it was in immaculate condition for its age. He told me up front that the power steering did not work. Not being familar with this power steering system, everything I see looks like it should work, but there is absolutely not a drop of fluid in the reservoir my first question is what type of fluiid should I use. I want to fill it up and see if I can detect any leaks. I want to make sure I am putting something in that is compatible to what was available in 1989. The Boat is really not that difficult to steer without it, so I can actually live without power steering. The biggest difficulty is a lower speeds and with the motor tilted up. I mainly just want it to work since it is part of the motor and steering system. I hope I havent been to long winded. I am happy with what the boat and motor...just looking for some advice. Thanks for any help.
