My 1989 Johnson GT 150hp VRO has started popping out of gear when I'm just idleing slow, it don't pop out all the way, I can hear and feel it in the throttle control. If I go ahead an kick it I get a couple thuds and it locks in and off we go. I'm pretty sure it's the clutch dog. I'm wondering if I can just turn the clutch dog around, or can it only go in one way. Thanks

Try adjusting the cable. -----------------Has the lower unit been off for waterpump work ???-----------You can not turn the clutch dog around on this motor !!!!!

Hoping it is just adjustment, I assume the worse when it comes to outboards. I've had it 2 years and the lower unit has'nt been off.

What Racerone said. Mine would not stay in gear for anything. Turned out to be a bad shift cable, and broken weld where the shift arm and shift shaft meet. Don't ask how I eliminated the lower unit as the possible problem.
