1989 Johnson 70hp

New to boating here. Got myself a 89 tracker with a 70hp Johnson. The motor is a little hard to start but will start and runs good at 3/4 But has a tendency not to run very well at idle forward or idle reverse. Which makes it a little bit of a pain to dock. I have been told or read that I probably need to rebuild the carburetors. I've never rebuilt a carburetor in my life, but I am willing to try I mean after all what could go wrong LOL yes that was sarcasm. Anyhow I've been seeing A rebuild kit for the primer solenoid That adds a service valve. Looks to me like a bicycle valve which brings me to my question. Can I use this service valve to inject a carburetor cleaner or a Injector cleaner? Will that help my idol problem and if so how do I actually go about injecting something into a bicycle valve? Like I said I'm very new at this.

The first step is to do a compression test.----Post the actual values here.-----Read carefully,----Does the tell tale fitting come off the SIDE of the engine block or off the TOP of the block.----The electric primer valve might not be useful to clean carburetor internals.----Fuel that goes through the primer valve does not go into the carburetor bowl !----Are you pushing the key in and holding it in while cranking the motor over for a cold start ?

Thank you racerone fore responding.
Got my compression test done. All the cylinders were less than a mark on the gage difference.. Top cylinder was 120, middle cylinder was 120, bottom cylinder 120.
I am not sure what the tell tale fitting is so i attached pictures.
Yes i do push the key in for s cold start.

is 120 a good compression?
My idle forward/reverse a carb issue?? is it time to get them rebuilt??
or should i look some-wear else first?

Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" ( 1 cm ) on each lead ?-----Checked flywheel key ?----Checked thermostat ?----Did you install a new water pump impeller ?-----Checked gear oil ?------Mixing gas / oil at 50:1 or is VRO tested and in service ?

i will check the spark today
flywheel key - i checked to ensure the flywheel T mark was at the TD of the #1 piston
No new water pump i get a good stream from the tell tale
gear oil checked and replaced last fall (one a year)
Mixing gas 50:1 yes
not done anything with the fuel pump
