I have a 89 johnson tracker series motor 50 hp and I have had a problem recently with it first starting up and running great at idol and full throttle. After awhile of running it though the engine quickly just boggs out. At full throttle the boat will barely move and every now and then it will seem to jump like its going to go but then just dies down again. The other day while running it I realized that when I push in the choke and hold it in it will run great but without the choke boggs right back down... any ideas on what I need to look at?

"You could clean and rebuild carbs always a good idea. loosen up some sticky parts

BUT

check your fuel supply, it sounds like its not getting enough fuel. If you have a primer bulb, does it collapse while the engine is running? You may have a clogged fuel line or fuel tank pick-up. Perhaps some water in the tank. Its spring, rain and moisture in the air.

Also, check the fuel vent to make sure its not clogged or obstructed.

Check the fuel, its sounds like fuel starvation."

You will need to remove and clean the carbies as you state when you hold the choke in the motor goes ok but when you release the choke it boggs down. If there were a fuel restriction the choke wouldnt help

I had a very similar problem.

I had a very similar problem.

Yesterday discovered that the spark sending tip of the distributor's rotor is VERY dirty. I had to scrape of a LOT of deposit to get to the bare metal!

Also cleaned/scraped off all the dirt of all contact spots within the distributor. And ... wollla! Now I'm affraid I will need to tie myself to the boat not to go overboard! ;)
