1989 johnson 30 hp in it to win it would love some pointers

purchased this motor for a 30' sailboat and was told that it was maintenanced throughout its life but hasnt been fired up in a few years. im a newbie to outboard motors but know two strokes fairly well and am mechanically inclined so i took it as a challenge which it has been for the last month. dropped lower unit and disassembled in its entirety and then rebuilt which was a pain but i got it back together. i installed new water pump and impellar as per the service manual instructed. i also changed the charge coil under flywheel as well as a bearing and replaced a good many parts that just looked worn. today i cranked it and for the first time it ran but it aint pissing and while i could take on the challenge of disassembling another part of the motor the lower unit bout had its way with me and im open for any suggestions as to why its not pissing. it runs at least for as long as i want it to without pissing because i know that could cause damage so anything would help
 
yes, i made sure to put the tube and key in. theservice manual said to spin drive shaft clock wise to seat impellar in water pump housing which i did and i spun it a few times when the housing was tightened down. i double checked everything twice before i mounted lower unit. still no pee. could the lines be clogged? i know i read a couple people had to blow out the lines. i know the motor sat for a while. when it did crank and run the motor did smoke and got hot but working on two strokes i know that they get a bit warm. i dont want to mess anything up so im afraid to crank it again until problem is resolved.....Stumped.
 
Try a length of weedwacker line to ream telltale while engine is started up, If you can't keep your hand on the head for a 6 second count without a scorched finger she's running to hot! Further diagnosis will be needed.
 
Are you running in a barrel of water at least 5 inches above the cavitation plate above the prop? I agree start it up and monitor the head temp if you can hold your hand on the head without burning it your good. If not pull the thermostat housing and see if water gushes out when you start it.
 
The water gets to the tell-tale before anything else---yes before the thermostat too. So if it isn't squirting from the tell-tale then the tell-tale or its fittings are plugged. OR, it isn't even getting up there from the water pump. Now it's up to you to do some troubleshooting to decide which it is.
