1989 Johnson 25HP Shift Linkage Quandry

I'm trying to get the lower unit pulled off my 89 Johnson 25HP. Everywhere online shows a little plastic nubbin that is popped off the top linkage rod after it is un-threaded from the bottom to allow it to pass through the lower unit when it's pulled off. I can't see any plastic tab on mine. I'm wondering if there's another way to disconnect the linkage rod? I'm confused.

Everywhere online is correct.----You have to find that plastic piece.----It is split and comes off easy.-----Careful as they are proud of that piece.------Often times you have to scrape the paint of the upper rod to be able to move that nut.

Thanks! I was able to pop that nut up the shaft after dousing it in PB Blaster for a bit. I found the little plastic clip and managed to pry it off and then spend 30 minutes crawling around the garage floor like a cave man looking for where it flew off to. I found the little bugger and lower unit slipped right off. Any tips for slipping the lower unit back together once I rebuild the pump? I don't want to muck anything up. I'm good at that!

I'm rebuilding water pump. Would it be wise to throw the new shaft seal I have in there? It's at least 12 years old. Pull it out with screws like the prop seals or is it best to just leave it if its not leaking do you reckon?

Pull the driveshaft out.------Use a hefty screwdriver or similar to pop the 2 seals out.-----Install new seals.-----Put grease between the 2 seals.------Slide driveshaft back into the pinion gear.----Done.

OK, thanks. When you say grease between the 2 seals should I use something like wheel bearing grease or lower unit oil in there?

I said grease.-------Not oil !

Right on....got it thanks! I got it all together, hopefully correctly. I replaced the o-rings on the black tube that connects to the water pump and in sliding it back in I noticed the little flanges on the ends of the black tube near the o-rings are slightly different. Of course I failed to mark which end of the black tube is supposed to go into the pump and vice-versa. I included pics of each end of the be. Any idea which way it goes?
