I mistakenly reversed polarity

I mistakenly reversed polarity with the starter leads. Saw some smoke before I could get it disconnected. What a stupid thing to do.

I can't see any obvious damage but I know it's there. Is these a fuse in the starter circuit? Since I saw smoke I doubt it. I don't have an electrical diagram for it?

I hope the damage is confined to the starter circuit!!

I think the model is a J15ECEC

I think the model is a J15ECEC Year 1989. The only number on the motor is the serial number R8189846.

As long as you didn't try

As long as you didn't try to start it with the battery hooked up backwards I don't think you hurt the starter. The charging system is another story. If you have a rectifier in the system you cooked it.
You need to get a factory manual on your engine and check out the electrical system.

Thanks!!

Thanks!!

I looked at the electrical drawing. There's a good chance I blew the CD2U and stator as well as the rectifier. Very costly and stupid thing to do.

Needless to say I felt like crawling in a hole.

It is possible that the damage

It is possible that the damage is confined to the negative battery cable and or power pack and or rectifier.

Try and start it. See what happens. I don't think you can cause any additional trouble by doing that.

"I pulled the flywheel and wen

"I pulled the flywheel and went over everything with a fine tooth comb. The only visable damage seen was a wire on the rectifier. Doesn't look burned but was showing a spot of bare wire so I kinda think the insulation blew out.

I ordered a new rectifier and will install it. I need to pull the power head anyway to rebuild the fuel pump so I will visually inspect all wiring again then. If all looks ok will try and start it when I get it back together. I'll also test the start before I install the power head.
Thank you,
Bill"
