1989 JOHNSON 110 GEAR OIL

Shop for---Evinrude gear oil---Amazon.------Since motor is 35 years old , in my opinion it needs a seal kit in lower unit.---New water pump impeller-----Easy and cheaper than gears . bearings and shafts.----Since you just bought this engine you need to do a compression test.----Post the actual values here.----These motors have a history of piston rings breaking.----Determine condition of engine BEFORE spending any $$$ on it.
 
Thanks for the advise, I bought it because it was very low price and it is in very good condition, the only owner had it stored for the last 12 years waiting to fix the boat but that never happened... the guy past away and now his family is selling or giving away some of his stuff.
I own a pretty similar motor, 1988 J90TLCCA and it has been with me for the last 29 years running two or three times a year in salt water sometimes going two years without a single start and when is time again it will start pretty easy, it really has been a workhorse so I thought I'll buy it to replace it because it is (looks) in much better condition that mine...
They say the motor was running 100% the last time they ran it.
So will see, I already have the water pump, carb kit, and I'll buy the gear oil as well...
I'll check compressions and will see.
Can you tell me more about piston rings breaking?
 
That is a known issue.----Will happen to most of these engines in due time.-----Have rebuilt a bunch and more of them in the parts shed !
