1989 Help! Electrical problem???

I have a 1989 Mercruiser Alpha One 3 liter stern drive with some sort of electrical problem. I ran the engine at the water hose in my driveway for approximately 5 - 10 minutes today....it was running fine. I turned the engine off, and then went to turn it back on, and suddenly I lost all power. I pulled the battery out, and ran down to Autozone to have it tested - good battery. When I put the battery back in, reconnected the cables - I had power again. Upon hooking the water hose, and turning the key to start the engine, I lost all power again, totally dead. Any ideas on what my problem might be?

start simple by checking all the battery cables pos and neg for tightness and corrosion, if you have one test the battery switch also. if the power did not come back there is a fuse by the starter you could check.

Check the battery connection at the starter. Also check the connections on the battery switch, if you have one. Checking a connection means, disassemble it clean it and reassemble it. Sometimes it is not enough just to pull on the wire. Once you have done all of this, take the main engine harness connector apart and inspect it.(it's the large black plug with the hose clamp on it.

with a helper and a voltmeter probe for where you loose the battery feed or ground. could be just a loose ignition switch connection.

main ground cleaned when ? Disconnect the battery anytime you mess with connections. The ground is found by following the neg cable to the engine and it should be a thru bolt on the flywheel cover backside. Remove and clean with sandpaper the inner circle the bolt, and the sides of the circle, don't forget the nut, side shiny also.
