"1989 GT150 (J150STLCEM) [35 amp system] with powerpack, rectifier and stator assembly replaced 1 1/2 years ago won't crank. It gave trouble cold cranking a few times but once cranked, it would crank again easy as ever as long as warm then run strong like normal. Now it won't crank period. I get weak intermmitant spark at 2 cylinders. The stator ohms out good and I changed the powerpack out with an old one that is still good with no change. I also did a key switch elimination test with no change in spark behavior (also bypassed the kill switch just to be sure.) All wires look good. The one problem is when I did a sensor coil resistance test. All wires ohmed out except for the 'A' terminal on the starboard side which will only give infinity. I checked the wire a few inches back up from the connnector and got the same result. I shifted things around, turned it over and the resistance tested the same. Is is time to change the $350 timer base? I've been told by two mechanics it's rare to have an issue with one."

"Ken, I will leave the diagnosis for someone who works on these big engines, but can say the weak spark would not be indicative of the timer base.

That only produces the pulse that "tells the coil to fire", it would be the stator, powerpack or coils that would either produce/store/release the charge resulting in the weak spark.

So I wouldn't be in a hurry to spend the 350 bucks.."

what do the inside of the prim

what do the inside of the primary (from pack to coil) and high tension (plug wires) look like? Are they clean.

Are you using an open air gap to test for spark?

"I put on a new powerpack abou

"I put on a new powerpack about 1 1/2 years ago while replacing the stator assembly and rectifier, which both needed to be replaced (powerpack was still working but the potting was cracked open.) The wires look good as well as the plug wires (also replaced before.) And yes, I'm using a an open air gap test for the spark. I'm currently hunting down a pulse voltmeter to get a better picture."
