I have a 1989 Evinrude E40TECEC 40HP (short shaft)and recently replaced the water pump and must have rotated the shift linkage rod in the process. The motor will shift into forward, but not reverse. Need to know what height to set the linkage.

Under 17? Are you sure its in neutral? I didnt think there was even an inch of threads for it to even be unscrewed that far.

And yes, mounting surface(top of foot) to center of hole. Its tough to keep the tape measure straight and eyeball 1/32 of an inch. I used a little 1/8" x 2" long machine screw and nut and temporarily installed it through the hole - it stuck out far enough for me to get an accurate measurement from the mounting surface to the screw.

Yep, prop shaft will spin freely. It would make sense that it was too high since it wouldn't fully engage in reverse, but like you I wasn't expecting to be that far off. Thanks for the tip on getting an accurate measurement.

Well mine was only off a couple turns (maybe 1/8" or so) And I had the same problem. A whole inch is pretty drastic. Can you move the shifter rod manually and feel that it is in the middle (Neutral) position. You should be able to feel it jump into and out of gear. If it feels like its jammed up or wont snap into gear spin the prop shaft a little to get it to click in. If I unscrewed mine an inch I dont think it would even be screwed into the shifter anymore. But yours may be a whole different setup - mine is an all mechanical shifter. (1985 50 hp)
