"I have an 89 ERude 110 v4 VRO

"I have an 89 ERude 110 v4 VRO on a 16ft CC. The day I bought it I took it out on a lake to give it a good run. The motor started right up at the ramp and seemed to be running ok. Once I got a little further out, I gave it some gas and it was very sluggish. At WOT it wouldn't even plane, and it kinda surged. I shut the motor off, checked the fuel lines and cable linkages, checked the VRO for leaks. Everything looked ok, so I started it back up and this time it ran great... for about ten seconds and it shut off. No matter what I did I could not get it to start again, so I had to get towed back to the dock. When I got it home, it started up and ran great. I have been running it in the driveway after I get home every day this week, and it has ran fine until tonight. Ran it for 5 minutes and it shut off. Can't get it to start back up... it just cranks and cranks. I also noticed earlier this week that the tach works intermittently. If anyone can tell me what I should do I would appreciate it. This is my first boat and I have had a bad experience so far... please help..."

you are hooking it to water when in the drive way arent you?

on the tack i would say clean all the wire connections. do you have a voltage gauge or an amp gauge?

"ya I'm running w/water.

"ya I'm running w/water. None of the other gauges work at all, but I do get 12v from ign and good cont. to ground. I did hook up a volt meter to the batt while running. Voltage seems to go up and down, but never above 12.50v. The battery was fully charged before I killed it trying to start it. I also tested for voltage on the grey wire on the tach and it goes up and down.

I will probably have to redo the wiring in the console to get the gauges right, mostly worried about stalling and not starting again. I'm not really sure what to check as far as that goes..."

do you have good spark and com

do you have good spark and compression on all cyls?

had the boat been sitting and not ran for a long period before you bought it?

"I'm not really sure about

"I'm not really sure about the history of this boat. The guy I bought it from said he used it all the time, but he also said he never had any problems with it so I don't trust what he says.

I don't have a compression tester., I try to avoid the tool trucks as much as possible but I may have to visit the Snap-On snake.

I will also check the spark tonight.

I started it up this morning and it turned over, but at full throttle I only got up to around 2000 rpm (hard to say with tach bouncing all over), and then it would kick in and go way up and come back down. Went in and out a couple of times before stalling and will not start again.

The VRO looks new, but there is some oil underneath it. I'm wondering if that might be part of the problem. I never get any alarms, though..."

never run at full throttle whi

never run at full throttle while on muffs or not under load. if you do that is asking for big trouble. it can cause all kinds of damage.

""I started it up this morning and it turned over, but at full throttle I only got up to around 2000 rpm..."

it wasn't running at high rpm, I had to push the throttle all the way just to get it up to 2k rpm, then it would rev up and immediately back down to between 1300 and 2000 rpm. Opening the throttle plate all the way isn't what does damage, it is free spinning at a very high rpm that does, and I can assure you it wasn't. If I backed off down to idle position it would stall...

Please don't tell me its linkage or idle set screw or something like that. It only acts this way at certain times. Other times it runs fine and idles fine.

Please read the entire post before commenting. I was an auto mechanic for 5 years before I decided to get a real job, so I know a thing or three about engines, just not marine outboards..."

"I had a 1990 Evinrude 120HP which would run fine until it got hot, then die. It turned out to be the stator."

have you checked the fuel pump

have you checked the fuel pump gasket and made sure there are no leaks? it sounds like maybe starving for gas.

i know what you mean about the tool trucks i felt like a kid in a candy store the first time i had a new charge account-that is until my wife found out i bought a $2000 tool box.

i would clean the carbs and put in a new water pump to be on the safe side if you dont have a lot of history on th motor.

"Looks like I should probably

"Looks like I should probably start rebuilding the top end. I'll start with pulling the carbs and send them out. Then I'll replace the stator, regulator, powerpack, and timer base.

Should I try to replace the VRO pump with just a fuel pump? I read somewhere on here that was possible, but not sure if it is recommended...

Plus I'll have to do the lower unit... I noticed last night that there was oil coming from the water intake(or at least it looks that way).

Am I forgetting anything??? After all that it better run right or its gonna meet the 12-gauge..."

you are going to blow a lot of

you are going to blow a lot of money and may still have the original problem with your approach to the problem(problems?)...the oil that you see on the lower unit may be oil that was unburned because of the missing and running bad for example....get a compression gauge and check the compression...a cheap gauge from harbor freight or some place will do..then check for good spark...a good spark should jump 5/16 of an inch...1/4 minimum...if you cant or will not check these two things yourself i would recommend buying a couple hours time for a good outboard motor tech to do them and look the motor over..repectfully..Carl

"a good spark,should jump 7/16

"a good spark,should jump 7/16"--7/16" min,and preferred,....however,..slow cranking speed,bad cables,weak batt can all contribute to a seemingly bad/weak ign.."
