1989 Evinrude 10hp does not rev up

"I was out with using my motor and made it a couple hundred yards when the motor died. I realized that I forgot to open the vent on my tank, but even after doing so the motor only runs at a rough idle. Could I have damaged the fuel pump? Thanks for your help and suggestions."
