I have a mercury 1989 90hp had to replace seals in the lower end .
After I pulled the gears out of the lower end I pulled the shift linkage and the shift cam fell out. But in the process at the very end of the gears of the lower end where it connects to the shift cam a metal thing fell out to . I got it back together but now I can't get it to shift and when I do it completely opposite when I shift. Of course this is my first time doing this. Any help would be great thanks 66tray

Sounds like the shift cam is on downside up. It should shift F-N-R by turning the shift shaft counter clockwise.

Downside ? Does that mean I have the cam up side down.
Because I have tried turning it . I got it In neutral and tried to install it and it's Completely Opposite
So When I turn the shift rod counter clockwise same thing
Oh the thing that fell out of back of the gears
