1989 80 hp

I have 1989 80 Hp mercury Outboard I recently change the water Pump and now it’s stuck in Gear.
I did have the shifter in the forward position when I drop the Lower unit and put it back together when I Put it in neutral to start it was still in gear I have drop it a half a dozen times and can’t figure it out can any one Help Me?

Alright, the shifter might have been in forward but what about the lower unit?
The lower unit shift shaft turns clockwise for forward.
Take the case off and turn the shift rod with a pliers until you find neutral. The prop will spin free.
Than turn one click to the right. (clockwise) No further than that. The mechanism inside the unit can turn a lot farther, but will be way out of position.


If this does not work, than plan B is to unhook the shifter cable from the engine and move the lever into forward. The cable adjustment might be off a little.

Plan C is to put everything in neutral and turn the flywheel with a socket.
