1989 75 HP Mariner Tilt and Trim problem

" My tilt and trim was working

" My tilt and trim was working at one time but now all that it is doing is clicking through the solenoids by using the up and down switch. There are three solenoids, one for the starter, and apparently two for the tilt and trim. This is a three wire tilt and trim system. Wires are blue, green and black. Can you give me a possible solution.

" If both the up and down solenoids are just clicking, I suspect the trim motor is the problem. It's unusual that both solenoids would fail at the same time. After making sure all battery connections are clean and tight, and the battery has a good charge, take a testlight to check the operation of the solenoids. Operate the trim switchs and see if you have power going to the trim motor on either the large green or blue terminal. Power there then the motor is bad, no power then the solenoids are bad. "

Also, check with jumper cables directly from battery to trim motor. If not working, the motor is the problem.
I had a power trim (Johnson 70), where the springs for the brushes (in the electric motor) had corroded and almost disappeared. I replaced them (just simple coil springs, doesn't seem to be sold as a spare part), and did a careful seal job on the electric motor. Also be sure to clean the brush area from graphite dust, as it is conductive.

I have found that it is the motor. How do I relieve the pressure to get the motor up as high as it can go so I can get to the motor?

I guess what is the best way to get to the motor to take it off.

" Probably a hydraulic relief screw. Dont know about Mariner, but a Johnson has it on the side of the T/T unit.
