1989 70hp Just Died???

The motor has been running good. I run it a couple of hours per week on average. Normally burn 1/2 tank of Rec90 and fill it same day. Yesterday it had been running fine at 3500 rpm for about 10 minutes and just stalled. No symptoms, a total surprise. It re-started but ran rough for a couple of minutes. Had a hard time getting it to idle or find a rpm to get it into gear. After a couple of minutes I got it gear, got it back to 3500 rpm and it seemed fine. Restarted a dozen times thru the day and it ran fine. Restarted fine when I got it home for it's freshwater flush.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking at a minimum a fuel filter change is in order.

Thanks,
John

Check the fuel line right from inside the tank to the motor for leaks.----Costs nothing to inspect that.---------------Will the motor go to 5500 RPM ?-------Running with VRO in service ?------If in service has oil consumption been verified ?

it could have been anything from a tad of water in the fuel to an electrical problem....anything...was it an abrupt stop or like it was running out of fuel?
I would put am inductive timing light in the boat so if it fails again I could decide if it was a fuel or fire failire..

I don't get the chance to get it to 5500 rpm with typical rough water. Yes, VRO is still in service. How do I verify it's correct operation? I've never ran out of fuel before, so I don't know what that is like. If I remember correctly, the bulb was hard. I'd remember if I'd had to refill the carbs with the bulb. I'm still leaning on a fuel problem. I'm going to change the fuel filter anyway. While doing so I'm going to change both air silencer gaskets as I see fuel resting under the silencer area. Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
John

...as I see fuel resting under the silencer area.

That is somewhat normal. The airbox isn't real tight, even with new gaskets. On my 1989 60hp the plastic parts exposed to fuel have warped over time, so the gasket wasn't clamped correctly at all places. I had to sand down the center dome a little.
