1989 60 hp Evinrude/No power

My motor ran fine out to the fishing hole, after starting it back up to go back to the marina it does not have any power. it will start fine and idle fine but will not run over around 5-8 mph? I changed fuel filter still problem is the same. The motor runs great out of water until you put a load on it. Like i said starts on the first turn of the key and idles it just wont run now with a load over 5 mph and the smell of gas is extremely strong. Can someone please help me?

Sounds like you picked up some trash. A small piece of debri can hang up the needle valve and cause the engine to flood. You could try draining the carbs to see if there is any contamination. Squeeze the bulb several times with the drain screws out to try to wash it out. If that dosn't work the carbs may need to be cleaned. These days the alcohol in fuel will attack an older fuel hose and turn the inside like suaded leather. These rubber particles can flow through the fuel system and contaminate it. If you find rubber dust in the fuel you will need all new hoses as well as have the carbs cleaned. Look it over real good and find out where the fuel is leaking from. Squeeze the bulb and see if one of the carbs overflows, the you know it's in the carbs.
