My manule says that my 350 has

My manule says that my 350 has a timing ring mounted to the flywheel. Does the distributer run on this gear or on the cam? If not what is the purpose for the gear on the flywheel?

A 350 Chevy distributer runs off the Cam,+ should have a Timing Tab mounted to the timing chain cover,......"
 
I don't undertstand either

I don't undertstand either but my Selco service manule shows how to remove and install the timing ring they call it from the flywheel but does not say what it is for or what it is for.

Do you have a distributor or just a box with the 8 plug wires attached. I'm wondering if you have the OMC infamous Spitfire ignition? I think it had some kind of a timing device mounted in the flywheel.
