1989 50 won't always start

I have a 1989 50hp 3 cylinder (OC226798) with unknown hours on a 15 Whaler. Pre-mix.

the boat will always start at the dock with a squeeze of the bulb and choke, but during the day of fishing it occasionally doesn't want to start. cranks and cranks and cranks.
I try squeezing bulb, no squeezing bulb. Choke, no choke. Just cranks. Kill switch seems good.
Last time I actually advanced the fast idle when it sounded like it was going to catch and it worked.

I've drained the battery trying to get it going.

Oh, and the rectifier went out again, meaning it won't charge. When I replaced the rectifier last, it was charging up to 16v.

The motor runs strong once going. A bit smokey at lower speeds due to premix, but pushes my 15 Whaler with 3 batteries, 70# trolling motor and 2 guys a solid 35mph on GPS turning a 14" Stilleto stainless. Touched 40 by myself and 1 battery and no trolling motor in the bay averaged 2 ways.

Whats going kn with the no starting and blowing rectifier?
mechanic is honest and said he would just be guessing.

Thanks,

The wiring looks very good. Great for a 27 year old motor. I have looked closely. Nothing visibly wrong.
Tilt switch on throttle only. Played with that.
Kill switch is toggle switch on control box. Moved up and down. Feels solid.

I have not checked for spark when problem occurs. What is the best way to do so?

this problem looks like a problem that was just in here...same motor and same symptoms..different name...if it is the same motor please use the old thread...

It might be the carbs. Try this: When it's running at a high idle, hit the choke (actually, the enrichener circuit). The motor should slow right down. (If it doesn't, the choke circuit is plugged--easy to do since the passages are tiny.) If it does slow down, hold the choke ON until it nearly stalls, then repeat this procedure at least 4 or 5 times. That will clear the passages.

If the motor doesn't slow, then the passages are totally blocked, or the choke mechanism isn't rotating the enrichener shafts all the ay to open.

Jeff

PS: It's a good idea to do this procedure now and then, to keep those passages open.

I remember the choke trick when I had a carbed 1987 Yamaha. Was told to run boat at WOT, then hit choke switch. Threw me into the dash the first time, not expecting such a sudden deacceleration!
I'll try this Tuesday.
