1989 48hp Johnson SPL - Need more power

Recently purchased a fishing boat with an 89 48hp which runs great. I was hoping for more power and speed out of it. Is there any way to upgrade without a complete motor swap? I know some motors you can change the carb to a bigger motor and get the same performance. I've seen this on my 9.9 increasing it to a 15. Is this a possibility with a 48? I want to be able to pull a tuber better and get down the lake faster. the boat is rated for up to a 70hp but that upgrade isn't cheap.

Any help is appreciated.

Your 48 is at the max for that configuration power head. Suggest upgrading if you are under powered for your use.

If you want to pull a tuber faster, you probably need to go down in prop pitch.
If you want the empty boat faster, you may need to go up in pitch.
If you want to achieve both - buy a bigger engine!

thanks for the responses. I do need a new prop and will check out the pitch on the current one. I'm guessing my only option is an updgrade as I want a little improvement in everything.
