1989 40 hp pinion bearing

I'm going through a 40 hp '89 evinrude lower unit. I'm having trouble removing the pinion bearing from the case.Does any one have any experience with this? Thanks.

Have you removed the driveshaft nut, then removed the driveshaft?

Thanks for the quick reply. I got the bearing out tonight. Had to rig a puller. I see by my manual a special tool is required to determine the correct amount of shims to install when reassembling the pinion bearing/drive shaft/thrust bearing. Is there any other way to figure out the shims required? The old shims were destroyed when the thrust bearing gave up.

Have a dealership use the special tool to determine the shims you might need.
