I just replaced the seals and o-rings n my lower unit. I put it back together an now it wont shift. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong.

Thanks,

Tom Megna

The measurement (in neutral) from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the top shift rod hole is critical. Did you turn that rod out of adjustment?

Won't shift? The shift rod is jammed/frozen & stuck in one of the gears, remains in neutral only??

Joe,

I measured the height of the shifter with a Combination square before I did any work, and I checked the height after the work was done. I took the lower unit apart again but it did not look like it was right. I can't tell from the diagrams. I down loaded. I need to find a good write up on how to reassemble the shift rod.

Thanks,

Thomas Megna

I don't have the actual measuremnt of that model's shift rod. Another member will need to get it to you. However, the unit absolutely needs to be in neutral to do that procedure.

Joe,

I am sure the gearcase is in neutral but it will not let me fasten the screw in the lower unit. Is there a special way of getting in to fit into screw hole. I think it will shift if I can get the screw in. It seems like it can't go deep enough into the drive shaft to put set screw in. I am sorry to be a pain I JUST WANT TO GO FISHING.

THANKS,

TOM MEGNA

Likely you are talking about the pivot pin for the shifter fork.------Things have to be assembled correctly or it will not go in.----You might have to start over and are you working with a proper shop manual ???

Yes it is the pivot pin. I am still trying to track down a factory service manual. $80 plus shipping is a little steep for a retired disabled charter captain. Sorry about the stupid questions. Tight lines apt. Tom megna

As a last resort.... you can remove the lower unit then turn the unit upside down hoping that the inner shift lever will fall into the cradle where it belongs. If it does, and you can shift the engine manually back and forth (neutral/forward/reverse) a half dozen times or so... you are indeed a lucky person.

If not, the only thing to do is to tear the unit down and start from scratch. Let us know how it went for you.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:
