1989 35 hp force impeller and oil problems

I would welcome any help, I have a 35 hp force motor, I believe it is a 89. Model # sticker has faded out. I found that the gear case had water in it. Not leaking from the vent plugs or gear case going out to the prop. Put new oil in it and noticed that some of the new oil was leaking out of the screened area (water intake?) Could the water tube going from the intake to the water pump be cracked?. I also found water-oil mix above the impeller housing. Also there are splines on top of the shaft that will not come off, so I am unable the pull the old inpeller off the shaft. Any ideas?

The impeller should slide of the top of the driveshaft !-----perhaps burrs on the edges of the spline.-------------A light touch with a file may be all that is needed.

Pressure test or have a shop pressure test the lower unit, -------That is how leaks in the lower unit are found.

I have a 35hp 1988 force. It's kind of a pain in the ass to change those impellers. Supposedly there is a "special tool" to get the small brass ring off of the top of the shaft. I asked my local marina shop (who will actually work on these motors and has parts available) Seaway Marine in Seattle. They said they have never heard of a tool like that. They sell the brass rings though. I had to cut mine off with a grinder to replace the impeller. Be careful not to nick up the shaft though. I did a little but it didn't cause any problems. The water supply going to the power head from the intakes is solid, steel or aluminum. I'm not sure why you would get water down there. They don't have a gasket on the lower unit or anything. At least mine didn't. I've run my for two years probably 60 to 70 hrs and it's been fine since I replaced the impeller and gear oil. I'm gonna change it this spring and possibly try to change the power head over to a 50hp force I picked up last fall. The 50hp motor is a short shaft model that won't work on my boat so I'm hoping they're interchangeable. Trying to get a few more mph.
