1989 35 horsepower no pee, wont run, smokes from under hood etc.

Hey guys, I am at a loss here. So the other day my engine broke down doing some weird stuff. Since then I've replaced the impellor and have tried flushing the system from both the top and bottom. When I attached the hose to the water tube on the bottom side it came out the top but with everything put together and on the hose the water seems to leak somewhere out the bottom of the powerhead and just pool up in the bottom of the cowl. I put it all back together and tried it at the lake on the trailer and it was seeping smoke out of the hood and still not peeing and just sounded terrible. Kind of knocky sounding. I have not done a compression check yet but I guess I will. Does anyone have any idea where to start or what to look for? Please help!!
