1989 305 electronic ignition upgrade

"I have a 1989 larson hampton with a mercruiser 305, it has the original ign and I am considering upgrading to HEI. I have heard there may be a safety issue with gas fumes in the engine compartment due to the open coil compared to the original oil filled one. is this a concern is there a safe electronic ign available thanks"

"Thanks for the info, My ign is points and condenser and i want to upgrade to electronic, it doesnt have to be HEI that is just a cheap fix as it is readily available and easily changed, but I am not interested if it is possibly unsafe, I will check out the marine grade electronics"
