1989 21 ft open bow bayliner

"I have a 19 ft '84 Baylin

"I have a 19 ft '84 Bayliner Capri. Engine is Volvo 4 cyl AQ125A. Outdrive is Penta 270. I am trying to figure out my outdrive or my engine/outdrive will work in a 21ft '89 open bow bayliner that sank and engine might work. Current owner tells me the engine is a V8 maybe a 351. Outdrive has been sold (but was a Volvo, he doesn't remember which one). How can I determine what my combined boat options are? Does hull VIN# tell all? I have attached photos of unidentified engine and boat.

"The engine on the picture is a Chevy V8 (305 or 350) attached to a late model 280 transom shield.

If you want to install your current engine/drive in that boat, you can. Just remember that you will have to install the whole package, as the transom shields are different (but the transom hole and bolt pattern are identical).

The main problem I see is that an AQ125 will give you roughly half the HP as the current installation, and that may not be enough at all.

Your current 270 outdrive may work on the V8 provided you either change the lower gear assembly or install a new gears (1.61:1 for a V6 or V8 versus the 2.15:1 you have now for a 4 cylinder); and also you will have to change either the clamping ring or the steering helmet. If you got the boat cheap, you may want to just buy a used 280 outdrive coming out a V8 and install it. Make sure, though, that the clamping ring has the pin with the two Allen screws rather than the single 1/2" Allen bolt. Check this:

I have found a possible candid

I have found a possible candidate 280 outdrive from a 1986 2150 Bayliner Capri. The engine for this boat is a chevy 305 V8. I've asked the owner about the clamp ring...he is confused...so I have asked for a photo of the helmet.
