I just bought this motor, and tried it out yesterday. The seller told me it had a "miss", that I figured might be a simple carb clean job. Having run it, I don't think it the carbs. When throttling up, the engine acts likes its 'kicking back', for lack of a better word. Almost like a cyl is firing too soon. It's not constant, but does it enough that I won't run it. I went though the coils, replacing them one by one with a good one. Nothing. I've got new plugs, a great spark on all 4, new fuel, new fuel tank and lines, new filter. It starts great, idles well, but under load it starts acting up. I even thought it might be the prop slipping, so I swapped that. Compression is 130 on both top cyls, and 125 on both bottom cyls, the motor has had little use, it's never been apart. Could it be the carbs, or maybe the power pack?

If the engine feels like it's hitting a submerged object... it's jumping out of and back into gear.

That was my first thought!! So, I swapped props, thinking it might be slipping. Nope. Then I pulled the gearcase, and pulled it apart. Nothing wrong there, everything is good, no gear damage, good bearings and clutch dog, and now I have a reason to reseal it and change the impeller. Shiftrod is the correct length.

It turns out all 4 carbs had the floats set about 1/4" too low!! Reset them, runs good now, all the way to 6,000 rpm. Thanks for the help.
