Hello everyone, it’s been a while since I posted and I need some info on a new project engine. To make a long story shortish, a friend lent his OB to a “friend” who lent it to his grandkids who never winterized or maintained it in anyway. My friend finally got it back and asked me to look it over. When I opened the LU drain plug, I got about 2 tablespoons of oil and water out. Luckily there wasn’t enough fluid inside to freeze and crack the housing. A pressure test shows the drive shaft seal leaking so badly that I can’t pressurize the rest of it.

Based on all of that I will be replacing all of the seals in the LU after tearing it down to inspect the bearings. So finally to my question:

Does anyone have specs or advice on building a bearing carrier removal socket / tool?

Thanks and I promise to be less wordy in my next post.

A little more info, normally I would find a metal pipe of the appropriate diameter I fit inside the gear housing and notch it to fit the bearing carrier slots. I’m just wondering if there is a better way to unscrew the carrier without buying the actual tool? Thx

On some of these ( I can not see your motor ) the thrust washer can be turned around to use as the tool.----And the carrier has a left hand thread.

That was great info Racerone, thanks!!! Especially that it had left hand threads. I might have done damage had u not told me. I was able to reverse the thrust washer and the carrier loosened right up. Found more water, contaminated grease and some rust on the gear teeth. Now, on into the depths.

Thanks again
