1988 Johnson 90hp Lower unit small notch

I just put in new impeller kit last night and tell tale stream is fine but I noticed water coming out of a small square cut in the lower unit
Is this normal ?
I havent had this boat very long and just now noticed it.
Any help will be appreciated
