"I've got an 1988 johnson

"I've got an 1988 johnson 88 horse that is extremely difficult to steer any time, ether direction, in or out of the water. I've cleaned and lubed the push pull bars and that didn't seem to help. Could the push pull bars be worn out? How can I tell?"
 
Disconnect the steering from t

Disconnect the steering from the motor. Manually push the motor back amd forth. If it moves easily then you know the problem is in the cables which will have to be replaced. If the motor is still tight there are a couple grease fittings that might help.

"Thanks IBNFISHN, I did what you suggested and the motor turns freely and the steering is almost as difficult to turn without the motor connected. The connector going into the end of push / pull bar looks like a hydraulic hose if thats the case any suggestions for my next move??"

"That's a classic worn out steering cable. You'll need to measure the cable and determine if it's a rack or rotary. a rack will have a long skinny piece of metal under the dash behind the steering wheel. A rotary setup will have an oblong circular thing behind the dash. Andrew carries cables on this site.
