I have a 88 model four winns boat I recently bought that had been sitting for about 6 years, I rebuilt the starter, the carb and drained the gas tank. I got it running and have been using it every weekend for the past 2 months and have not had any problems until the other day. I had to turn around a pick up some one that had fallen off of the tube, when I turned it off it keep running and chuggin till it finally cut off, when I tried to crank it it locked down so I pulled it from the lake and took it home and pulled the plugs out, it had water on top of the pistons. I turned the motor over and got the water out and put the plugs back in, put the muffs on it and crankled it, it ran for about 5 minutes and the temp started to rise to about 200, I turned it off and pulled the cover off of the outdrive to access the impeller hosing it had melted a hole in the cover and chewed up the impeller. Why did it have water on top of the pistons and why is it not pulling water from the muffs. This is my first boat and am hoping someone can help me on here, I don't want to spend alot of money and it be something serious and costly and by the way it is a 4.3 omc and cobra outdrive. Thanks

If you still have the original bat wing exhaust manifolds they could be rusted through, and if the muffs were not on right and the water pump dry it will destroy itself.

when you turned around to pick up the tube did you get a big wave of water that hit the back of your boat. there are shutters in the exhaust that are suppose to keep water from coming back through the exhaust if they are stuck or have rusted off you can get water in your engine when you stop the boat and get hit by the wave that is trailing the boat. this is referred to as swamping the boat. when you were running on the muffs were you at an idle or did you have the rpm's up. Run at idle only on muffs a garden hose can NOT supply enough water running above an idle even for a short burst. ( I learned that the hard way) and when I did it melted the impeller and housing.
