Bought this boat this year. Ha

Bought this boat this year. Have had it out many times and has run flawlessly until last week. Now it wont shift into forward or reverse without stalling and has progessevly gotton worse. I found that a fuel fitting was leaking on the tank and have replaced that but made no difference. I put a piece of cardboard from a cigarette pack between the linkage and throtle and that seems to work but idle is to high and that was just a test. The lines on the linkage line up with the throttle so I dont want to readjust it as I don't see what would have changed there. I havent checked the plugs yet. Any ideas would be appreciated.

"i had the same problem w/ my 1984, 85hp. i simply adjusted the idle screws on all the carbs "seating each one then backing out 7/8 of a turn which is manual specs". runs great now at low speed and whenever i have to shift."

"Okay I pulled the plugs and they look fine. I can't find any ajustments on the carb itself except a small brass looks like a vent on the side where the fuel line goes in ontop of the float, there is a slot in it for a screwdriver but it sure doesn't look like a set screw. The only adjustments appear to be on the linkage itself and there is a screw/stop at rear of engine that I could adjust so the linkage doesn't come back as far. Everything is tight though and can't figure what has changed."

"I have 74' chrysler 85 hp. It will run and go into gear fine with just water ears and a hose but when I put it in the water where it's under a load it just dies. I think I'll have a look at those idle screws. I've been trying to get this motor right again every since I replaced a broken throttle cable. A "mechanic/salesman" said it could be the lower end but I think it's something fairly simple. I have a clymer manual which describes tune-up and maintenance pretty well but something is missing. I hope it's the idle screws. Thanks for the info. Will follow up.

Sincerely,
frustrated boater"

"I haven't had much time t

"I haven't had much time to look for a manual for my motor can anyone suggest one for the do it yourselfer. Seloc looks like it might be. Also just a thought, it doesn't appear that the flywheel has ever been removed and I wondering if the points and condenser might be causing this problem. However the plugs look okay and it starts good and when it gets going it runs okay to full throttle. But I do think it might have more in her but she is only a 35 hp."
