Have a 1988 Evinrude 50 hp VRO. It was sittitng up for a while when i got it. Took carbs off and clean them very good. it will start and run as long i keep pushing the key in (can't remember what that is called right now) but it will not stay running. One more thing im not sure if the VRO is working... was thinking of just unhooking it and mixing the gas so that way i KNOW it is getting oil...is this a good idea?

You may have missed something on your carb repair if you have to push the choke in to keep it running. Yes disconnect the oil side of the vro and mix your fuel 50:1.

Where the carburetors in fact dirty and did you remove / clean the high speed jet ( orifice ) found in the bottom of the float bowl ??

yes i cleaned all jets. i think i may know what it is now just not sure how to find it. could it be an air leak in the gas line somewhere cause that is what it sounds like that the motor just keeps running out of gas and the fuel filter also keeps running out.....

Disconnect the oil line from the vro and cap the fitting on the vro. Find the wires going to the vro along with the wires coming from the oil tank and disconnect them. Mix up some 50:1 premix fuel in your tank. Disconnect the fuel line inlet off of the vro, put the line in a clear container and pump the primer bulb until you get tinted fuel out of it and reconnect. You're good to go.

You said it will keep running when you push the key in !-----That clearly indicates blockage in the carburetors as the primer bypasses the carburetors altogether.-------Questions in post #3 where not answered clearly !

yes i removed and clean both high sped jets found in the float bowl. i removed and cleaned one of the low speed jets the other one i could not remove......the carbs were not that drity but did have a bunch of oil in them

i'm sorry but i don't even know what the reed valves are and i am unable to do a compression test. what would i be looking for as far as the reed valves goes and a compression test. i did undo the vro and mixed my own gas. it starts even easier now but just wont idle at all. as soon as the gas runs out from me bypassing the primer it dies. i would like to thank you the help you have already given me.

If it quits when you stop using the primer then it is starving for fuel !-------------Describe what the highspeed jet ( orifice ) looks like, when you had it out for cleaning.

i unscrewed the the kinda of cap screw and put a smaller screw driver in the hole an d uscrewed the jet and until it came out. then i used carb clean from the can and spray the whole crab down very good.

i have notice that the fuel filter doesnt stay full if i pump the blub one time it fulls back up. How would i check for a air leak?

Get a clear piece of 3/8 vinyl hose from home depot , connect it motor to primer and see if you have any air bubbles while running

Just disconnect before your VRO and see if there are any bubbles in the line, does pumping the bulb while it is running keep it idling or does it stall ?
