hi

hope some one can help me the trim on my outboard is giving a bit of bother . what is happening it will lift or drop for about 5 seconds then stop and all you can hear when you press the switch is the relays clicking which are both ok . the trim will not operate for apx 30 seconds will go for 5 and stop again and it will do this on and on . any ideas would be great .

also i have checked the oil level and i am wondering what type / grade oil is to be used . looks like the is atf in mine . would this be correct ?

ATF is usually okay.

If you're saying that the electric motor cuts off after 5 seconds... You're describing a unit that has a circuit breaker engaging. Check all of the connections to make sure that all is as it should be. One bad connection would result in a voltage drop that would cause the circuit breaker to engage.

If however, you're saying that the unit simply stops moving BUT the electric motor keeps running, then you're most likely low on fluid. Raise the unit to it's full raised height, then fill the reservoir to overflowing, replace the fill plug/screw. You may need to refill a couple times.

thanks lads for replys . after the 5 seconds everything just goes dead no pump motor going or anything . im a coach mechanic myself and my knowledge of hydraulic wouldnt be great . the pump motor and main leads going to pump motor get very hot if you ask me . i have the unit tnt unit off the boat at the minute and operating it directly off a battery and same thing . when it resets itself you can hear the click from the tnt unit itself (cant really pinpoint exactly )
the previous owner was definatly at the motor as the housing on it has been modified to fit as were it used to use only two bolt hole directly across they have welded on two peaces of steel to make it a 3 hole patteren and they must of lost a bolt for it as they justd drove a tex screw into it which i have no fixed .

opened up my motor and can see whats happening but unsure whats causing it . on one of the brushs there is a contact which opens if it gets to hot . is it a fault with my motor or is it something else ( to much load , bad wiring ??)
