1988 Evinrude / no idle

Please help me .I have an 60hp 1988 Evinrude , it will not idle in the water .and if I put it in gear that's the end. hate to get rid of it , has a lot of power

You start with a compression test.----Follow that with a check to see if there is spark on all cylinders that will jump a gap of 7/16" or more.
