"1988 evinrude 50 VRO2. I recently took my boat to a shop to have it checked over and the water pump impellar changed. They called the next day and said #1 is junked and there is no compression,Vro quit and burned that cylinder, and it needs a total overhaul around 1300 bucks. They did a leak down test and 30% leak in #1. I told them I could not afford that and brought it home after 70 bucks for there time. The boat really didn't give me any trouble in the three years I have owned it, an it seems to have plenty of power. I had a local auto mechanic do a compression check and top cylinder was 125# and bottom was 123#, is that good and what do I need to do?? And wich is number 1 top or bottom?"

You need to find a new marine

You need to find a new marine mechanic. Numbers sound good to me.

"VRO did'nt take out 1--cy

"VRO did'nt take out 1--cylinder...and your marine mech's are idiots, and poss crooks!...trust your auto guy if his comp readings, are as u posted.."

Thanks for the post. I really

Thanks for the post. I really am confused about this leak down test that they are claiming they did to determin that it was "JUNKED". I did another comp test with different gauge and got 125# and 125#. Everyone I have talked to so far says thats pretty good and I should be fine running it. i allways value seconde opnions and appreciate any an all...

"If you have good compression

"If you have good compression and the motor runs good, nothing is "junked".

Either way, the VRO mixes fuel and oil for all carbs/cylinders at the same time. It cannot possibly cause damage to one cylinder while leaving the other(s) undamaged. If you only lose one hole, the best bet is on the carburator."

I hope this guy knows how to c

I hope this guy knows how to change a water pump because sounds like he doesn't know how to do a compression tst. HE WAS LOOKING FOR A QUICK $1300 thats why it pays for a second opion

"Yea I don't think i will

"Yea I don't think i will be taking anything back to that place. I thought it was odd that the boat ran fine right up on the trailer last year, and just going to have it "checked over" PM. And to get the call it was junked really got to me. I called the place back after doing the compression check and got a pretty good run around and then cussed at and hung up on. I thought about reporting this to the BBB but wanted to make sure I had a case. Thanks to all who have gave me your thoughts, I am glad I didn't just so OK Fix IT.. Wonder how many have... Just ordered the water pump impellar yesterday and plan on replacing it myself now!!!"

"What about the VRO on these m

"What about the VRO on these models, are they more reliable than the first ones that came out? Should I consider doing away with it and just mixing my fuel and oil?"

VRO is very reliable and well

VRO is very reliable and well alarmed.

Of course there is always the possiblilty the pump would fail at the same time as the alarm. You need to weigh this against the chances of someone forgetting to add oil to the gas.

I use the VRO and I'm quite comfortable with it.
