1988 60hp Johnson Tracker shift problem

I just replaced the powerhead, Runs great, put it on the water and it won't stay in gear. There was nothing wrong with the foot or gears before. Any ideas, did I miss something on the install

What year was the replacement motor ???----------Did you check that the spline on the bottom of crankshaft was the same ???---------Did you turn the shift rod by any chance ?

We actually rebuilt the same powerhead. I thnk someone may have turned the rod. Can I adjust it without pulling the head?

Remove the lower unit and adjust the shift rod height as per dimensions found by looking thru google.---------johnson outboard shift rod height----Dimensions are all there.
