"Still learning here. I tried to follow the coolant hoses (both antifreeze and raw water). It appears the antifreeze is plumbed from one side of the HE down to the circulating pump, throught the motor, out the thermostat, and through the manifolds before returning to the HE.

It appears the Raw Water pumps through raw water pump, through ATF Cooler, to the HE, out through exhaust elbows, and exits boat through exhaust.

Do I have this correct? If so elbows should break down faster than the manifolds right?

How often do you guys change the Antifreeze?(I understand that it is a 50/50 mixture)

On the raw water pump, I see the 2 bolts on the bottom of the mounting plate. Is this also the tension adjustment for the belt?"

Yes the two bolts are for tensioning the raw water pump drive belt. I do believe however that the flow of RAW water goes to the v-drive first. OH...Do you have v-drives? If not, then I think you are correct.

As for the elbows breaking apart easily...my experience has been otherwise. Now that I am on the other engine, I am doing that part tomorrow. I'll let you know"

"Unless you enjoy doing a lot of wrenching, when one wears down the other is not too far away from junk as well.Not worth the hassle compared to the risk.Extra gaskets and trying to keep track of what was what.If you remove the pump, make sure the hoses go back on the same or it can be a biggy mistake......Todd"
 
You are correct to assume that

You are correct to assume that the elbows and risers will fail faster because they have raw water running through them. I believe the bolts on the raw water pump are 3/8 x 16 I just replaced mine. On my Crusader my tranny cooler is connected to the line with antifreeze in it. I suspect this is to extend its life too. I didn't do it the previous owner did.

You better take another look at your plumbing. Your closed cooling system runs at about 160-170 degrees. Transmission fluid flashes at 175 degrees. You're not cooling that fluid you're heating it.

I don't have a lot to go with thats the way it was when I purchased it 2 years ago. I wondered if it was correct. So I should tap off the raw water coming in and go through the cooler then to the exchanger? I appreciate you advice.

Yes Brian. The cooler should

Yes Brian. The cooler should be very early in the system. Current production engines have the cooler prior to the pump. The coolers seem to hold up better in a vacuum environment than a pressure environment would would be created were it mounted after the pump. I highly recommend internal sea strainers of you are going to do this.
 
Well unfortunitly I really can

Well unfortunitly I really can't mount it before the raw water pump. I would end up with 8 foot hoses going to the cooler. I'll have to try it on the other side. I purchased some fittings last night and will cut it in tonight. The previous owner must have been a plumber theres a lot of copper tubing in place of hoses. I spent a couple of hours last night trying to find a schematic for the plumbing on line but I guess I wing it. Thanks for all you help Rick.

One more question do I have to

One more question do I have to have all incoming raw water going through it? I was planning to have a line coming off the raw water line to the cooler in addition to the line going to the heat exchanger. If not the line would go from 1.25 down to .75 for the cooler and then back up to at least 1" going into the heat exchanger.
 
Ok I'm really not as stupi

Ok I'm really not as stupid as I sound. After I read what I wrote I realized the correct thing to do is get the "right sized cooler" and install it in line with the pump. I'm always trying to make whats there work. I should realize that whats is already there may not be the correct way to do it. Sorry to waste your time with stupid questions Rick. Dawn finally broke over Marblehead.

There are a bunch of them on e-bay. Here's one quick link, the size may be wrong but there are plenty more on there.

These must be excess inventory. The contact info for this one is Mack Boring. They are the ZF distributor for the region. I think I'll bid on a few myself.
