I have twin 1988 454 Crusader

I have twin 1988 454 Crusader Inboards and recently my starboard engine is running hotter than normal. My port engine runs 150 degrees all day long. My Staboard just started to run at 180 degrees we cleaned out the heat exchanger and checked the water pump and have gotten the temp down to 170 degrees. What is the normal operating range for these engines? Should I be concerned ? What else can I check for? Thanks

"I have twin 1997 454 XLi engi

"I have twin 1997 454 XLi engines. My starboard runs about 10-15 degrees warmer. In an earlier thread I read if the engine feeds the hot water tank, this could also make a difference. My starboard feeds the hot water tank. Mmmmmm

"I had the same problem last y

"I had the same problem last year. Removed the heat exchanger and had it cleaned and pressure tested at a local radiator shop. Turns out the HE had some internal leaks. Shop owner suggested new (he doesn't sell them!) because his previous attempts to repair them didn't hold well. So, have yours checked and see what happens."

So is 170 too high or 150 too

So is 170 too high or 150 too low. I just want to make sure I am not doing any damage to the engine. Thanks

Have you used a laser temp gun

Have you used a laser temp gun on all cooling parts of the engine? (cheap tool and really narrows the field quickly in diagnosing temps) I believe the thermostats are set for 160 and if you have not changed those...then they could be 20 years old right? 20yrs is along time for parts. I have about a 20 degree difference on mine. (yes stbd has hot water tank thread)So am in similar hot water. It would be good to know what is normal operating temps so am interested to hear what you find out.

"170 is fine on FWC engines.

"170 is fine on FWC engines. 180 is not unusual, 150 is too low and indicates a stuck or missing thermostat."

"I have twin 1988 454 350'

"I have twin 1988 454 350's. I went to time them today and am puzzled as to the mark to use on the fly wheel. When I first hit them with the timing light there was a bolt in close alignment to the edge of the timing plate. I can not see an actual mark, any advise as to what to look for?"

"Kevin, I don't have my Cr

"Kevin, I don't have my Crusader manuals w/me.....but do you time the engine from the flywheel or the harmonic balance in the front of the engine ????? Thanks Ken"

"Ken,

I am trying to time f

"Ken,

I am trying to time from the flywheel end. I wish I could see the harmonic balance, but there is just no way.

Kevin"
