"I just bought a 1988 renken 2008, It has a merc 4.3 175 hp. I was thinking of replacing the alternator and starter in the spring, My thinking was not knowing how much time is left on these And fishing Lake Michigan I didn't want to take any chances, Is this wise or a waste, I'm a big believer in preventive maintenance. Any thing else I should consider. Thanks"

"Welcome Kevin:

That is exactly what I did with my 87 4.3L for $250. Since it is winter now, take closeup photos of the wires on each and make a detailed diagram of each by wire color, etc. and tag each wire as to where it goes. Remove them both and take them to a reliable rebuild shop and ask them how much to rebuild them, not just repair them. You want new bearings, brushes, diodes and regulator, commutators turned and undercut, new starter solenoid. If it is over $75 each, buy new.

While you are at it, replace the engine slave solenoid--$15 and replace the orange alt. wire to the starter with a new one. Get a 4' piece of 8 ga. fine strand copper wire and new crimp connectors with some shrink tubing to seal them. Fine strand may be hard to find but it carries current better than standard strand auto wire. After you crimp the connectors, solder them also. Let the wires cool off then slip the shrink tubing over each connector and heat with a Bic."

"I may be missing something here. Is there something wrong with your alternator and starter? If its just preventative, I can think if a laundry list of things to do before replacing starter and alternator. my thoughts."

Agreed. I aways leave what&#39

Agreed. I aways leave what's working properly alone.

Better to save your $$ for impellers and exhaust parts that will need changing.
