1988 40hp starter problem

My starter just spins, it does not jump up and engage the fly wheel. I replaced the starter since it was original but the same thing happens. Any thoughts?, thanks
 
Usually due to a low battery, or loose cables, or tight but dirty cables. Remove, clean and tighten all cables, wire associated with the starter system.
 
I tried a new battery with the same result. I failed to mention that when I originally hooked up the battery this spring there was a loud pop followed by a poof of bright white smoke. I had the cover on and didn't see where the smoke came from. Anyways after that happened I tried to start it and the starter just spins. Any ideas what the problem could be? thanks!
 
I was able to start it with jumper cables, so should I just replace the cables, and if so where can I find a replacement set of cables?
