1988 2.3L Whats this screw for?

I have a 1988 OMC (2.3L). On the starboard side of the upper gear housing there is a medallion with with the OMC logo. The parts drawing shows that there are supposed to be two medallions. However, on the port side there is (was) a large screw. The screw is removed from the side of the upper gear housing but now it can not be replaced because there is nothing to thread it into. I am guessing that there was some sort of nut that is now rattling about in some cavity of the out drive.

I assume that I will be needing to remove the out drive and fish out the missing nut. Any comments or helpful ideas is appreciated.

Thanks, Scott B.

Re: Whats this screw for?

So it is like the movie Space Balls. ... They had a big red button on the dahsboard of the space ship that had a sign saying "Do Not Push this Button" ...... I just had to remove the screw. Doh !

After you do get out the nut and re-install the screw use the strongest stuff you have on the threads so you don't do it again.

It is not the typical hex nut. It's a flat metal plate that you'll need to hold in place with a long set of needle nose pliers. I also seem to recall a seal on the screw. Check its condition and replace if needed.

Thanks .... I'll find the nut/plate from what ever crevice it land in, I'll locktite it in place. There is a seal on the screw. It looks to be in OK condition. The sticker/medallian is long gone.

I doubt that I'll ever make this mistake again.

Thanks,

Scott B
