1988 120 hp. overheating one side and high idle

Hi,
I moved this motor from my old boat. Since I moved it i cant get it to idle down. The port side alos runs hot ,no alarm sounds. Starboard side runs cool.Did a new head gasket on port side. the port side also seems dry maybe from heat. I also dida carb rebuild on port side.
Anyone have a idea why one side could run hot and high idle?
Also any info on cooling diagrams would be alot of help.
thanks
john

Running on muffs or in a barrel?
As Joe said, the cold side might be the problem, not the hot. Buy a heat gun and check the temp.
As for 'high idle':
Is your quick start working?

Hi, I want to thank you guys ,you put me on the right track. I switched therms and the idle worked and so did the cool side.I bought a new thermo today and everything should be fine ,motor ran great even before i put in the new thermo today. This is after I changed the new water pump and rebuild carbs.Hope it uses less gas then it did before .
i do have to retime it because i changed the setting .I guess ill have to have the shop which has helped me do the timing do to it should be done on a test wheel.
The 1988 is different than the 1987.My book went up to 87 ordered a 8 book from marine engine.
Thanks again
